There are two hotels a short walking distance from the Walnut Creek BART: Motel 6 and Marriott. The Motel 6 is your basic motel: clean, cheap, and no frills, but does offer free parking. The Marriott is more expensive and you have to pay for parking, but they have a restaurant on-site and gym, which the Motel 6 does not. Guests complain that you can hear a lot of freeway noise from the Motel 6. At the Marriott, the chief complaint is that the guest rooms have vinyl flooring rather than carpet. You’ll need to pay for WiFi at either hotel. Overall, both hotels have significant pros and cons, so we recommend the Motel 6 unless you desire a gym or you’re a really sensitive to noise.

Neighborhood Vibe: Walnut Creek is a suburb of San Francisco about 40 minutes from downtown San Francisco on the BART. It has more open space per capita than any other city in the Bay area, so it’s full of scenic hills and parks. The numerous residents of the area like Walnut Creek for it’s proximity to nature while also offering upscale dining options.

What to Eat: There are several of great casual eateries in the area that will please foodie parents, but also have a kid-friendly atmosphere. Morucci’s Deli is known for their large Italian sandwiches, while Ike’s Love and Sandwiches puts a more unique twist on sandwiches with their fun combinations. 310 Eatery is great for cocktails and burgers.

Things to Do: It’s a great area for families because of family-friendly attractions like California Waterworld, the Butterfly Habitat Garden, and the playground at Heather Farm. The California Symphony and Company C Contemporary Ballet are both based here. Festival Opera performs free opera in Civic Park.The views of the valleys from Shell Ridge Open Space are spectacular.
